Big Project blog 2 (pitch)

My next step is to create a pitch for my project. A pitch is a presentation describing an idea to try encourage funding for a project. To create a successful pitch I must grab the attention of whoever I am presenting it to and provide them with detailed information on the costs and target audiences my idea would be linked to.

To begin I first used a pitch template my tutor had provided as a base for my presentation. The first slide of the template was on the production of my project. It suggested creating a basic description of my music video to give the client a rough idea of what my project was going to look like. By doing this I aimed to convince the client that my project was worth their time and resources. So to be as convincing as possible I used my research on online identity's as an explanation to why the theme of identity is an important topic to explore. I then backed up my research with statistics from an article I had researched that proved how Gen Z live double lives on the internet. I did this to present my clients with facts and statistics that would persuade them into the importance of my project, with factual proof instead of just my word. Along with this I would describe the format of my video as an MP4 file and described where I wanted to upload my video, while also giving information on why I believed it would be a good idea to present my project on these platforms. The platforms I wanted to present my music video on were TikTok Instagram and a Music video competition I had researched I then described how and why these were good platforms to spread my message on. I also thought it would be a good idea to present the client with a professional example of a similar idea being successful. This led me to researching the lady Gaga born this way music video which is a great example of a music video that advocates for embracing identity.

Here is the template PowerPoint. I used as reference. Feel free to pause at any point.

Here is a Miro board I used to gather the facts and research.

For my next slide my goal was to give an analysis of my target audience. For this I had to think about who the message behind this project is going to effect. From my past research and research I had done for my pitch I concluded that even though suppressed identity's can effect all ages, Gen Z and younger generations are going to be more likely effected by this issue due to their exposure to social media. I wrote this into my pitch but also mentioned how my project can also target older audiences as well, Especially since these are going to be the parents of the children affected by this issue. During this slide I also described how I will be appealing to these audiences. By researching trends that would relate to my music video. These trends are important as they can be a great way to spread something across the internet.

On my 3rd slide I described the visual styles and techniques I would be using in my music video, since this was part of my planning I didn't really have any research to incorporate into this slide. Instead I decided to prioritize making sure my client understood what filming techniques and skills I was referencing encase they weren't familiar with the technicalities of film production. I did this by comparing my techniques to more well known films such as the Joker. As well as giving a professional example of someone using a snorricam from the film hang over. I also described why id be using these techniques and provided my client with a demonstration of my music video capability's to show my experience with this style of film. This allows the client to trust me to be able to produce a music video as I have had practice with the style, and the music video I created also has a great use of colour which helps demonstrate how well my use of colour can be.

After this slide the next few became a lot more simpler. With slides 4 and 6 being about what equipment I would be using during my production. For these slides I made sure to explain why id need each piece of equipment and how much they would all cost individually as well as all together. I did this to give the client a clear understanding of everything their money would be spent on. I also included £100 for props and set design, upon reflection however I believe that this estimate was set way to high as most the props I will be using are likely to be borrowed or second hand. These slides still stand well as an explanation to what my clients money will be spent on.

The last 2 slides. Described Who I would collaborate with to make this project as well as what problems I believed I could run into during my production and preproduction. By doing this it gives the client an insight into what is going on with my project allowing them to feel involved while also advertising myself as a reliable creator who makes sure that their client is always filled in with the production they have invested in.

Finally my pitch was complete. All I had to do now was decorate each slide to show that I am passionate about this project and willing to put effort into it. While also giving my PowerPoint a more professional look. While presenting my project I found it easier to verbally describe my project using my pitch as a reference to go back on whenever I had ran out of thing to say. While presenting my project I also made sure to connect and engage with my viewer asking questions like "have you heard of this music video before" or "are you aware of this technique". As well as keeping my client attentive and engaged, asking questions also reinforces their understanding of my project. This is important to my idea since it is a hard concept to understand. My presentation also had many visuals for my client so that my presentation doesn't feel like paragraphs of boring text. Once I had presented my pitch, my client (tutor) wrote me some feedback of her opinions on my work.

Here is my finished pitch. Feel free to pause it at any points.

After my tutors feedback on my pitch I reflected on how i could've improved its quality and effectiveness, my first improvement would be on my PowerPoints aesthetic. As suggested by my tutor this would be an immediate way to improve my presentation, i could do this by using some transitions as well as adjusting text fonts and trying to make my presentation resemble my idea more clearly. This way my project would look more professional and well cared, as well as helping my client visualize my ideas a little more. Along with this I believe that mentioning a specific influencer during the target audience section of my pitch, would of been a good idea as it could've given the client a good impression that I know how to make this project as successful as possible. The reason I didn't do this was because I did not want to make my pitch feel to long and cluttered. If I were to mention this however, influencers I could choose may be popular content creators such as, Charli D'Amelio or a more cheaper option, Niana Guerrero. The final thing I realized while reflecting was that I had forgotten to mention the copy right for the song in my budget slide. To be able to use the song "you spin me right round" in my music video I would need to purchase a synchronization license for the song which are often sold for around 60 quid on specific websites. Or I could reach out to one of the band members and  politely if I could use there music in my video. This would be quite challenging however since most of the band are no longer living.

So to conclude I believe that my pitch went well and would've done a good job at convincing clients to invest into my project. But if I were to improve I would

  • Mention a synchronisation licence
  • Describe my project more (mention how my project is a conversation between a singer and his suppressed identity)
  • Plan more before my pitch
  • Make sure the links in my powerpoint worked
  • record myself presenting my pitch and make notes on how to verbally improve
  • Add transitions to my PowerPoint
  • Link my presentations aesthetic to the idea
But for now I am pleased with my pitch and will move onto further planning.

  1. Well done, I particularly like your reflective comments at the end, this shows great attention to detail and recognition of areas to develop next time. Remember to refer back to this blog in your next project to remind yourself of those points you've identified.
